Our sector forums summary

As the peak body for foster and kinship carers in the Northern Territory, we are committed to giving our carers and partner organisations the opportunity to share their unique perspectives around foster and kinship care. This is done through our Carer Sector Forums which were held in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs. The forums had an outstanding turn out with over 60 carers in attendance.

Guest speakers included Foodbank NT, Territory Families and CREATE Foundation. You can read more about Foodbank NT and CREATE in this edition of our e-news.

Territory Families shared information on policy amendments that have been implemented which directly impact you as a foster or kinship carer. Most notable were the amendments made to Permanent Care Orders. We are so pleased to inform all Carers where in previous times, if a permanent care order was granted, carer allowances would cease, you can now be granted a permanent care order and still receive an ongoing carer allowance until your child in care turns 18. If you would like to know more about the Permanent Care Order amendment or any of the policies that were discussed at the forum, contact our Advocates Roslyn Harvard and Monalisa Fungalei to discuss the amendments further. Phone us on 1300 030 928 or email [email protected].

After a wonderful morning tea provided by Tickled Pink Catering and partners in Alice Springs, we facilitated an active Q&A workshop with Territory Families where Carers were able to ask questions or raise issues that were important to them. We received over 30 questions from Carers who were unable to attend with over half of those questions from Katherine Carers. It was so great to see so many carer members engaging throughout the forums either in person or by sending questions to the panel. We will be making a report of the forum outcomes available in the coming months.

We have received so much positive feedback about the sector forums but we would still like to hear from you! If you attended one of our forums please let us know what you thought by sending us your feedback to [email protected]
